(b. 2001, Geneva), lives and works in Lucerne. She primarily works with black velvet by sewing or stenciling it, engraving, flocking, or imitating it, exploring its material conditions, and playing with both the cultural codes and formal typologies that the textile does or does not emit. In this space, Sania Nascarella processes themes of uncertainty, illusion or glamour, dreams or sequences of her life, all veiled through strategies of the partial and the implicit. Simultaneously, backed up through material, form, and titles like Cliffhangers, I Missed, Phony Smitten, or Day Dreamers, she creates relationships to the original fictional or referential contexts where the materialized motives, like bunnies, fireplaces, or specific textile patterns, were dislocated from.
This ambiguity unfolds as possibility, and through the narrative and hints of figurative presence, the perspective switches back and forth; one finds oneself simultaneously within different contexts and is at times even partly turned into a figure itself. — Text by Elia Brülhart
